As a Registered Clinical Social Worker (RCSW) with twenty years of experience working with neurodiverse kids, teens, and adults across the spectrum of needs and abilities, I come into this work knowing how differently a particular diagnosis might look in every different person. While having a neurodivergent brain is positive in so many ways, having a neurodivergent brain in a society designed for “in the box” humans can often make everyday tasks a lot harder, so the fact that you’ve made it into adulthood without going through a formal diagnostic assessment tells me a lot about your resilience and that you’ve likely developed some successful strategies to help compensate for some of those challenges.
My approach to diagnostic assessments is to help you develop language to describe your experience and to give you something concrete to lean on when you advocate for your needs, whether that be with your doctor, employer, or school.
